If you’re jumping into Minecraft 1.21.6 and wondering why your villagers aren’t offering your favorite enchantments anymore, you’re not alone. The villager trading rebalance has completely changed how Librarian villagers work — and this time, it’s all about the biome.
In this post, we’ll break down how the system works now, which enchantments are locked to which biomes, and how to build your ultimate enchanting setup under the new rules.
🧩 The Biome Rebalance: What Changed?
Before 1.21.6, any Librarian could offer any enchantment at random, including top-tier ones like Mending or Protection IV. Now, Mojang has biome-locked enchantments, meaning you need Librarians from specific village biomes to access certain books.
There are seven biome types you need to know:
- Plains
- Desert
- Savanna
- Taiga
- Snowy
- Swamp (no natural village)
- Jungle (no natural village)

Each of these has a fixed trade pool, with one special enchantment that only appears when the Librarian reaches Master level.
🔍 Enchantments by Biome
Here’s what each biome-specific Librarian can offer:
Biome | Master-Level Enchant | Other Enchantments |
---|---|---|
Plains | Protection III | Smite V, Punch II, Bane of Arthropods V |
Desert | Efficiency III | Fire Protection IV, Infinity, Thorns III |
Savanna | Sharpness III | Knockback II, Curse of Binding, Sweeping Edge III (Java only) |
Taiga | Fortune II | Blast Protection IV, Fire Aspect II, Flame I |
Snowy | Silk Touch | Looting III, Aqua Affinity, Frost Walker II |
Swamp | Mending | Depth Strider III, Respiration III, Curse of Vanishing |
Jungle | Unbreaking II | Power V, Feather Falling IV, Projectile Protection IV |
Note: Sweeping Edge III is only available in Java Edition.
🪨 Not All Enchantments Are Available
With the new system, some enchantments are gone from Librarians entirely:
- Removed: All Trident, Crossbow, and Fishing Rod enchantments.
- Untradeable: Treasure enchantments like Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, and Wind Burst.
- Limited: Some enchantments are not offered at max level (e.g., Protection III instead of IV).
You’ll need to combine lower-tier books on an anvil or use the enchanting table to get those max levels.
🏡 Java vs. Bedrock Differences
- Sweeping Edge only exists in Java.
- In Java, baby villagers can inherit biome from either parent or the biome where they were born.
- In Bedrock, villagers typically take on the biome where they’re born — making Jungle/Swamp breeding easier.
🦜 How to Get Jungle and Swamp Librarians
Jungle and Swamp villagers don’t spawn naturally, but you can still get them:
- Cure a zombie villager in that biome.
- Breed two villagers in the biome — babies will take on the biome skin and trade pool.
Once you have one, give them a lectern and level them to Master for their special enchant.
✨ Strategies to Get the Books You Want
- Use lectern rerolling for non-special books. Break and place the lectern until the book you want appears.
- Level the villager to Master to unlock the special enchantment.
- Set up paper farms and trade paper to quickly gain XP and unlock more trade levels.
- Combine lower-level books using an anvil to reach max levels.
Remember: Only trade after you see the book you want. Once traded, the Librarian locks its trades.
❌ Can’t Get These from Librarians:
- Loyalty, Riptide, Channeling, Impaling (Trident)
- Multishot, Piercing, Quick Charge (Crossbow)
- Luck of the Sea, Lure (Fishing Rod)
- Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst (Treasure enchants)
You’ll need to loot, fish, or enchant directly to get these.
❓ FAQ
Can I get Mending from any Librarian?
Nope. Only Swamp librarians can offer Mending — and only at Master level.
Is lectern rerolling still a thing?
Yes, but it only works for non-special enchants, and you must do it before any trades.
Do I need all biomes for all enchants?
Yes. To collect every enchantment book available via villagers, you’ll need one Librarian from each of the seven biomes.
