The Totem of Undying is a powerful combat item in Minecraft that prevents a player from dying once it is equipped. It grants bonus effects and can be a lifesaver in Hardcore worlds, boss fights, or while exploring dangerous areas.
✅ How To Get the Totem of Undying
You can only get the Totem of Undying by defeating Evokers, which are hostile illagers.
Where to Find Evokers:
- Woodland Mansions (rare structures found in dark forest biomes)
- Village Raids (Evokers spawn in later waves)
Drop Rate:

📌 Looting does not affect the drop rate. One Totem is always dropped per Evoker.
🎮 How To Use the Totem of Undying
The Totem only works if it’s in your hand (main hand or off-hand). If you take fatal damage while holding it, the Totem activates automatically and saves you from death.
What Happens When It Activates:
- Heals you with 1 heart (2 HP)
- Removes all negative status effects
- Grants:
- Regeneration II for 45 seconds
- Fire Resistance I for 40 seconds
- Absorption II for 5 seconds
Activation Conditions:
- ✅ Works in Hardcore mode
- ✅ Works for mobs holding it (e.g. via commands)
- ❌ Doesn’t work if in inventory or hotbar but not equipped
- ❌ Doesn’t protect from void damage or /kill command
- ❌ On Java, can fail if an Arrow of Harming deals physical damage first
🧠 Additional Notes
- When activated, green and yellow particles surround the player.
- An on-screen animation plays, showing the totem hovering in front of the camera.
- The item disappears after use—it can only save you once.
- In the New Nintendo 3DS Edition, it can activate from any hotbar slot.
- It is now renewable due to Evokers spawning in raids since version 1.14.
