Hytale Lighting Guide: How to Craft Crude Torches for Exploration
Exploration is a core pillar of Hytale, but as the sun sets over Orbis or you venture into deep underground caverns, visibility becomes your biggest challenge. Unlike other sandbox games where you might need coal or charcoal immediately, Hytale allows you to create early-game lighting using natural resins. In this guide, we will show you how to gather materials and craft your first set of Crude Torches to keep the darkness at bay.
Step 1: Gear Up with a Crude Hatchet
To collect some of the specialized materials needed for lighting, you should first craft a basic toolset. We recommend starting with a Crude Hatchet. It requires 2 Rubbles, 2 Plant Fibers, and 2 Sticks. This tool will allow you to chop down trees much faster, which is essential for the next steps. For a full breakdown of your first tools, see our guide here:

Step 2: Collect Plant Fiber for Binding
The first ingredient for a Crude Torch is 1 Plant Fiber. This material acts as the wick and binding for the torch. You can find this easily by destroying small bushes, shrubs, or tall grass found in almost any biome in Zone 1. Simply punch or use your hatchet on the foliage to collect it.

Step 3: Harvest Tree Sap for Fuel
Instead of coal, Crude Torches in Hytale use 1 Tree Sap as a flammable fuel source. To get this, use your Crude Hatchet to chop down trees. When the tree logs break, there is a high chance they will drop Tree Sap alongside the standard wood logs. Keep an eye out for the yellow/orange droplets on the ground.

Step 4: Pick Up Sticks for the Base
The final component is 1 Stick. These serve as the handle of your torch. You can find these scattered across the forest floor throughout the map. Walk up to a fallen branch and press the F key to pick it up directly into your inventory.

Step 5: Craft Your Crude Torches
With all three materials gathered, press TAB to open your inventory and locate the Crude Torch recipe in the Pocket Crafting menu. Click Craft to combine them. This recipe is very efficient, as one set of materials will produce 4 torches, giving you plenty of light for your first night.
