If you’re playing on a superflat world in Minecraft Java Edition, you may notice something odd when using an Eye of Ender, it flies off in a direction like it’s leading to a stronghold. But when you run /locate structure stronghold
, it says none exist. So, what’s really happening?
🧭 The Eye of Ender in Worlds Without Strongholds
If Generate Structures was disabled: No Strongholds in Superflat Worlds
By default, superflat worlds do not generate strongholds. Unless you customize the world settings specifically to include them, there will be none.

Behavior of the Eye of Ender
When you use an Eye of Ender in a world with no strongholds:
- It doesn’t detect that no strongholds exist.
- Instead, it flies off indefinitely, always pointing in a consistent direction from your position.

Why It Flies in a Direction
- The Eye of Ender uses the game’s structure location system to guide you.
- If no valid stronghold is found, the logic doesn’t stop; it just leads toward a nonexistent goal, often based on internal defaults.
- In your case, it flew southeast, but this is not a universal rule.
- Different world seeds and player positions will cause the Eye to fly in different directions (sometimes north, west, etc.).
Flat World With Generate Structures Enabled
The stronghold will be found by the command, and the structure will appear where the world seed would place it:

Summary
- Superflat worlds don’t generate strongholds unless they are customized.
- The Eye of Ender still tries to find one and will fly forever in a direction, even if there’s nothing there.
- The direction (like southeast) is not always the same, it depends on the world seed and where you are when you use it.
- If Generate Structures was enabled, you’ll see it did generate, but it generated a floating Stronghold.
