For servers that often run offline minecraft versions, for security reasons, the Minecraft community generally recommends users to use a plugin for account protection in order to avoid hacks and inconveniences.
A great known plugin is called AuthMe. This article will help you on how you can install AuthMe on your server.
Downloading AuthMe
First you need to download a estable AuthMe release from AuthMeReloaded Jenkins:

By clicking on the file, your browser will download it.
(Note that a stable release have a ✅ “white heavy check mark” in front of it)
Installing AuthMe Reloaded in your server
Once you have downloaded the plugin, just upload it to your “plugins” folder in your FTP.
We highly recommend you to use FileZilla for this. You can find more about FileZilla in our article “ How to: Access Your Minecraft Server Files Via FTP “.
✔ Once AuthMe plugin is in your “plugins” folder, you need just to restart your server.
