Originally launched in September 2022, Rust Hardcore brought a brutal, stripped-down survival experience that players initially loved. But the excitement didn’t last; player counts quickly dropped, and the mode faded into the background.
Now, it’s getting a second chance.
Rust Hardcore Mode Refreshed
1. Fog of War Returns
- The Fog of War system is back in Hardcore mode, obscuring the map upon spawn and only revealing terrain as you explore. Unlike before; when the fog was tied to a handheld item; it’s now integrated into the normal map system for an immersive, high-stakes navigation experience.
2. Compass Overhaul
- The compass is now a handheld tool. Your location on the map is hidden unless you carry it in your belt, and the top-of-screen compass UI is removed; raising the tension around navigation.
3. Weapon & Ammo Crafting Changes
- Firearms cannot be crafted or researched anymore; loot only.
- Weapon repairs are allowed without needing research.
- Ammunition crafting costs have been inflated by 5×, encouraging more strategic engagement.
4. Respawn Delays
- Respawning via sleeping bags now imposes a 15‑minute cooldown.
- Beds have a 10‑minute respawn cooldown, adding weight to every combat decision.
5. Doubling Upkeep Costs
- Upkeep costs for all bases have been doubled, pushing players to optimize base designs and reduce bloated compounds; driving more raids and dynamic world turnover.
